Going Home for the Homeless

“Sooner or later, we all want to go home… at least that’s what my grandma says.” So begins the story of Mikey and Gran, starring characters in author Mary Batson’s soon-to-be released book Going Home. Excerpts from Mikey’s story have been put to music by Batson’s better half, local award-winning singer-songwriter Bob Sima. Together the two have created Going Home: The Tour, a uniquely heart-warming stage show featuring stories from the book woven through thematically related songs. Batson and Sima have taken the show across the country since its launch in March 2010.

On November 28th this artistic couple will be releasing their first CD together, Going Home: The Tour LIVE, a collection of Sima’s songs, both old and new, and Batson’s storytelling. “Going Home looks at our different ideas about home, how all these forms of home are really only reflections of each other. It also looks at the idea of being homeless, and all the different meanings that has, so it was a natural match to pair up this project with others working to address homelessness,” says Batson.

Wanting to share the abundance from this new project with their community, the Annapolis-based pair say it “just felt right” to bring this home-centered show together with one of the leading homeless prevention initiatives in the area. Lighthouse Annapolis, which recently opened an expanded facility, has been selected as the recipient of ticket proceeds from the Going Home: The Tour CD release performance. In addition, food and clothing collections are being taken at the show for the shelter.

The CD release show is scheduled for Sunday, November 28, from 4-8 PM in Millersville, MD, at the Historic Baldwin Hall, which has been generously donated for this event by the Baldwin Hall Board of Directors. The recommended ticket donation is $20, but rumor has it there’s a 50% discount with a coat donation. Batson and Sima will also be making an appearance at LHA’s Bountiful Harvest fundraiser on November 21st.

About the CD Going Home: The Tour LIVE is a 2-disc chronicle of Mikey’s story, a finding-myself journey with a homespun twist and just a dab of apple butter. “It all began on Gran’s front porch, with she of the great white rocking chair and I of the little wooden steps

…” An ebb and flow of songs and stories from author Mary Batson and singer-songwriter Bob Sima about what really matters… finding your way home.

“In words and music Bob & Mary remind us why we need to just slow down and pay better attention to what really matters… At the end of the show, we found ourselves more firmly planted to this earth but somehow more willing to look to the sky.” -- Fred Munroe, Musica Del Rio, Atascadero, CA
