Dr. Heaton graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Science and a minor in Mechanical Engineering. After serving five years as an engineering officer on nuclear submarines, he changed careers and graduated from the College of Dental Medicine; Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston South, Carolina in 1979. Dr. Heaton then attended the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery for his specialty training in endodontics. Following completion of endodontic training in 1981, he joined an endodontic group practice in Washington, D.C., but then discovered the Eastern Shore, and in particular, Easton. It reminded him of Canton, Missouri, a small college town on the banks of the Mississippi where he attended junior and senior high. Rick knew this was the place to raise his family and put down his “roots,” no pun intended. Dr. Heaton has been practicing here ever since.
Dr. Heaton also served in the Naval Reserve, providing endodontic services to Fleet Marine Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Dr. Heaton has served as President of the Eastern Shore Dental Society, President of the Maryland State Association of Endodontists, Board of Governors of the Maryland State Dental Association (MSDA), Chairman of the MSDA Council on Education, and Chairman of the MSDA Political Action Committee. He is currently President of the Navy League, Eastern Shore Council.
Dr. Heaton and Debbie, his wife of 40 years, who also works with him as a dental assistant, have two daughters who are pursuing careers in Healthcare Economics and Dental Hygiene. His office manager, Deneen, and Certified Dental Assistant, Kathleen, have been with him for 23 and 16 years, respectively.
Recently Dr. Gregory S. Russell, also an Endodontist, joined the practice, following seven years of service in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. Greg and his wife are from Crisfield, Maryland, and have a daughter in elementary school. Dr. Russell graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2003 and received his commission as an Army dentist. Following nine months of service in Fallujah, Iraq, with the 82nd Airborne, he returned home and completed his endodontic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was Clinical Director of Endodontics at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he was responsible for the endodontic treatment of over 10,000 soldiers. Dr. Russell is a Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Chesapeake Masonic Lodge of Crisfield, Maryland.
The Doctors and their staff are dedicated to saving your teeth with endodontic treatment in a gentle and caring environment. They use the latest technologies, including surgical microscopy, digital radiography, ultrasonics, and electronic instrumentation in diagnosing and treating their patients. Both Dr. Heaton and Dr. Russell are members of the Eastern Shore Dental Society, Maryland State Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the American Association of Endodontists.
