But, apparently, it’s not. In January, BWMC began its inaugural 12 Charities in 12 Months giving campaign. Hospital employees donated more than 600 articles of clothing (including warm coats, hats, and gloves), diapers, baby wipes, and other necessities, to help out a worthy cause: Sarah’s House, which provides assistance to the homeless.
The name isn’t the only reason I like this organization. Sarah’s House is located near Fort George F. Meade on the western edge of Anne Arundel County. They provide emergency shelter for more than 60 people and transitional housing for 22 families. They describe themselves as “much more than just a safe place to sleep. Our goal is to effect positive change in the families we serve by providing parenting classes and workshops, employment programs, licensed childcare, counseling, and transportation, all aimed at assisting our guests to achieve independence and strengthen their families.” Kelley McNey, spokesperson for Sarah’s (and pictured here with BWMC’s Luci Mazzullo), says, “We are so grateful to BWMC’s employees for providing us with the donations. These donations will make a huge impact in the lives of our clients.”
Here’s to Sarah’s House and the generous workers at BWMC. Each month for the next year, they will select a charity or organization in Anne Arundel County where employees can voluntarily donate clothing, food, or other items. For the month of February, BWMC has selected North County Emergency Outreach Network (NCEON) which provides food, counseling, and utility assistance for needy northern Anne Arundel County residents. Other designated organizations include: the American Red Cross, Annapolis & Anne Arundel County YWCA Arden House, Special Olympics of Anne Arundel County, Boys and Girls Club of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, SPCA of A.A. County, Providence Center, Inc., Food Link, Inc., Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Pascal Center, and Toys for Tots.
