The 156 nurses who have achieved certifications in nursing specialties received gift certificates for a meal in the cafeteria and their photos are displayed on the nurse certification boards at both hospitals.

Three nurses won a drawing for a one-year membership to their professional organization. The winners were: Stephanie Lutz, Surgical Services; Carolyne McDaniels, Intensive Care Unit; and Anne Santucci, Telemetry.

Certified Nurses Day is an opportunity to recognize nurses for their professionalism, leadership and commitment to excellence in patient care. Certifications held by Shore Health System nurses span 53 nursing specialties such as emergency, medical-surgical, perioperative, oncology, obstetrics and gerontology. Other certifications recognize individuals who have pursued education to develop their skills as nurse executives.

Board certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Nursing, like health care in general, has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence.

Shore Health System encourages national board certification for all of its nurses. Many nursing certification bodies exist to serve the full range of specialized nursing care offered in the contemporary healthcare system. National nurse-certifying bodies should be accredited by either the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification or the National Organization for Competence Assurance or both.
