Trash the Dress photo shoots

What am I talking about? Trash-the-dress photo shoots! If you've never heard of this uber-popular trend, it's where after the wedding, the bride dons her gown one more time, essentially to "trash it." I wasn't sure if this was something I wanted to do, mostly because I plan to sell my wedding dress (trying to recoup a little bit of that cost!) However, I was reading an article recently that said after the gown was cleaned, you couldn't even tell it had been soiled. Right now, my gown is fairly pristine with just a little bit of dirt on the bottom of the back of the dress. However, it's going to cost between $100 and $200 to get it cleaned. I figured, if I'm going to spend that much, I might as well really get it dirty!

Plus...I have no fantasy that in 30 years, my daughter is going to want to wear my dress. I have never actually seen someone wear their mother's dress, as lovely as that idea sounds.

There's an amazing contrast in these "trash-the-dress" photos of the bride wearing the gorgeous white gown and the dirty setting that she's in, ruining that gorgeous white gown. Sometimes the trend is referred to as "rock the frock," and the idea of photographing it really hit it big in 2001 with photographer John Michael Cooper in Las Vegas.

Trash the dress photo shoots can be done nearly anywhere that a gown will get dirty. I'm going to do mine in 2 weeks on the beach in Fenwick Island, which is where my wedding photographer happens to live. I think it will also make a great contrast between our wedding pictures in the desert in Arizona and the trash-the-dress pics at the beach in Delaware, where my fiancé (Uh, I mean, husband) is from. This is what I'm envisioning: I got my dress on, feet bare (or in flip flops), hair down and naturally wavy, with a flower pinned back.

However, our own Ashley Raymond did a photo shoot a little while back with staff photographer Tony J. Lewis, and we published the pictures in the Spring/Summer 2010 issue of What's Up? Weddings. Here are some of her photos:

I've also been researching trash-the-dress photo shoots at the beach, and I've found some great inspiration pics.

Just looking at these pictures gets me excited for my upcoming photo shoot! Have any of you ever "trashed your dress"?
