Magpie Performs at Calvert Marine Museum

Jun 15, 2011 11:53PM ● Published by Anonymous

This well known duo features the remarkable talents of Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner who began to play music together in 1973. They have traveled and toured extensively, performed in concerts, at folk clubs and festivals around the world, and recorded many times. Tickets are $5 and sold only at the door, check or cash. No advance ticket sales.

Terry's voice is a truly impressive instrument, not only because of its natural power, but also because of her versatility. A gifted singer of jazz and blues in the tradition of Connie Boswell and Billie Holiday, she is equally comfortable with the subtle beauty of traditional folk and contemporary songs. Add to this her uncanny ability to find the perfect harmony line, and, in a powerful blend of their two voices, enjoy a real treat for the ear. Terry is also an excellent player of the harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer, and rhythm guitar.

Greg is an outstanding guitarist whose dexterous fingerstyle can provide everything from a hard-driving rhythm to ringing lyrical beauty, a slow Scots air or a plaintive ballad to a rollicking ragtime blues or infectious swing. His high baritone voice lends power and beauty to the full spectrum, from growling blues, to a Chilean lament, to a sweet croon.

From the beginning, Terry and Greg's interests in various musical styles have led them to be eclectic in their repertoire with impressive proficiency in each different genre. They play traditional, classic country, swing, and blues of the nineteen twenties and thirties, as well as contemporary songs written by themselves and others. In the fall of 1998, Greg and Terry received the "Wammie" award for traditional folk duo of the year by the Washington Area Music Association. They also received the 1999 “Addy” Award for their song "Take Me Back to Harpers Ferry."

“Lite bites” prepared by Lotus Kitchen, along with beer, wine, lemonade, and water will be for sale starting at 6:00 p.m. in the lobby. Enjoy an intimate evening of acoustic music at the Calvert Marine Museum.
