Some people experience sinus, voice and swallowing disorders, and some seek relief from snoring or sleep apnea—and thankfully each of these conditions and more can be addressed by ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. Robert Meek of Anne Arundel Ear, Nose, and Throat in Annapolis.

Dr. Meek graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University and went on to complete medical school and residency at West Virginia University. Upon receiving board certification from the American Board of Otolaryngology, Dr. Meek took on academia and became an assistant professor at the University of Virginia in the department of otolaryngology. There, he further explored voice and swallowing disorders and participated in research on how reflux affects voice and swallowing. In 2001, Dr. Meek established his practice in Annapolis to treat conditions within his expertise of sinus pathology and voice disorders, and to provide personalized care and timely service. Always seeking to refine his practice and to keep learning about the latest advancements in medicine, Dr. Meek continues to attend educational conferences each year. He is boarded with the Academy of Otolaryngology and is board eligible for certification in the Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Meek resides in Annapolis with his wife, who is a practicing gynecologist, and his three children.

When treating his patients, Dr. Meek taps his academic experience and applies his precise evaluation and surgical skill. His practice uses cutting-edge surgical tools, including stereotactic navigation and balloon dilation of the sinuses to achieve excellent results with the least amount of recovery time. Additionally, Dr. Meek has developed a state-of-the-art voice lab in conjunction with speech pathology, to assess singers, professional voice users, and anyone who has high vocal demands but experiences difficulty voicing or trouble swallowing. Dr. Meek also conducts audiology exams to aid patients with hearing loss and dizziness. And, his soon-to-be paperless office is also transitioning to make use of iPad technology and include touch screen computers in exam rooms to facilitate better patient education.

Also armed with experience performing rhinoplasty and cosmetic injections, Dr. Meek meets and exceeds the cosmetic wishes of his patients by also offering BOTOX®, Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® procedures. When not treating his patients, Dr. Meek is involved in playing tennis, cycling and paddleboarding, and coaching his daughters in lacrosse and his son in soccer.

Q: My spouse complains about my snoring, and I am always fatigued when I wake up in the morning. I want to stop snoring and feel better, but I don’t want to wear one of those machines.

A: These symptoms could represent a serious condition called sleep apnea, which could also lead to many other compromising health problems. At the very least, I recommend an evaluation by a sleep specialist and to undergo a sleep study to discover the root of the problem. Ear, nose and throat sleep specialists do sometimes use devices to treat sleep apnea, however, not to worry because snoring and sleep apnea can also be improved and corrected with surgery.
