Corcoran Announces Youth and Family Programs

Join the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design on select Saturdays of every month for special family-oriented workshops inspired by the Gallery’s special exhibitions 30 Americans (October 1, 2011–February 12, 2012) and Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro: Are We There Yet?(December 3, 2011– March 11, 2012). Family workshops begin in the galleries with an interactive tour followed by an artist-led activity in the Corcoran’s art studios. Playful Patterns
November 12, 2011; 10:30 a.m.–noon
Ages 5–7
$8 per child, Corcoran members at the family level and above; $10 per child, public Adult companions do not need to purchase a ticket for the workshop, and re-entry to the collection after the workshop is permitted. The contemporary artists in the 30 Americans exhibition have a sneaky way of including intricate patterns all over their work. Families explore the galleries and draw the patterns they spot. Afterwards, in the studio, everyone creates their own unique patterns from a variety of materials. Up, Up, and Away!

Memorable Photos

Ages 8–12

Everyone loves sorting through old photographs and reliving the memories. In the galleries, families look at photographs taken when Abraham Lincoln was President and discuss how things have changed. In the studio, families create new art from old photographs. Please bring a couple of photographs to incorporate into your work. Family Day: Up, Up, and Away!

Get ready for an art adventure that covers a lot of territory—from under the sea to way out in deep space—during the Corcoran’s Family Day: Up, Up, and Away! This FREE epic journey includes gravity-defying performances, organic art workshops, out-of-this-world face painting, and eco trivia and prizes. Spring Ahead!

Painting the Sun

Ages 8–12

Discover how artists depict the effects of the sun without actually showing the sun through various methods like shadow and color manipulation. In the galleries, families study the sunlit work of old masters and sketch their own shadowed landscapes. Afterwards, participants head into the studio to perfect their works. Seeing the Sea

Throughout history, artists have strived to capture the beauty, mystery, and danger of the ocean. In the galleries, discover what goes into an ocean scene and then sketch the elements you like best. Awesome Architecture
July 21, 2012; 10:30 a.m.–noon
Ages 8–12

This is your chance to be an architect. Together, families embark on an architectural scavenger hunt and draw what they find. In the studio, participants create their own 3D architectural marvels. Investigate the trophies and symbols in the 18th-century Salon Doré, our very own room of gold. Then uphold your family’s honor by creating your own family symbol and shield in the studio. Youth Classes
Aspiring Artist classes offer hands-on, studio art experiences for ages 5–16. Taught by credentialed art teachers, classes give students one-on-one attention tailored to their skills and interests. In addition to receiving formal instruction, students engage in discussions that add to their knowledge of artistic concepts and broaden their perspective as members of a community of young learners. Camp Creativity and Studio D
Camp Creativity and Studio D (Ages 5–16) offers classes throughout the summer with a variety of options from morning to afternoon sessions or all day classes with pre- and post-camp activities. The schedule for each Camp Creativity age group (or ―Studio‖) includes a variety of age-appropriate thematic classes. Inspired by the work of artists from different time periods and around the world, your child will find new avenues of self-expression and gain an understanding of his or her creative potential.
