Brion Harris is a founder and managing partner of Premier Planning Group (PPG) and has been helping people at or near retirement age to manage their assets and plan for their retirement for nearly 15 years. Brion began his career with AXA Advisors in Baltimore, MD in 1997 and left in 2000 to create Premier Planning Group with his father, Dan Harris.

Brion speaks frequently on investment topics, coaching retirees throughout the community as well as to other top financial advisors in the industry. Brion is an active member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), which provides its members with resources to improve their technical knowledge, sales and client services while maintaining a culture of high ethical standards. As part of this association, Brion is a member of the MDRT’s Top of the Table, the highest sales level for financial services professionals. Brion has also been referenced in Forbes magazine, National Underwriter, Advisor Today, the Annapolis Capital, and recently voted in as a Five Star Wealth Manager for the year for overall satisfaction. This designation is judged by polling retirees in the area based on client responses, peer judgment, regulatory history and objective analysis of comments received by a panel of experts.

If you had the opportunity to ask a client of Brion’s why they do business with Premier Planning Group, they would quickly answer these two reasons: they give you world-class service with precise attention to detail. While that is fairly descriptive, if you pressed a little more they would tell you that they like doing business with Brion Harris for three reasons.

Independence:

“He is an entrepreneur, he owns the company, I like that he is not tied to any one specific company or product and that he is not compensated to sell one product over another.”

Expertise:

“He is very focused on a certain demographic, 55 and up, and has a real expertise in that area. Brion is what you call a Retirement Distribution Specialist, he makes sure that you have a plan and a process in place so that you don’t run out of money and can maintain your objective lifestyle in retirement.”

Holistic Planning:

“Brion has built a team of strategic partnerships and dedicated staff that is second to none. They are what they call a full service holistic planning firm. Besides keeping your goals on track and making your money grow, they have Estate Planning Attorneys available to help get your legal house in order, the top Mortgage Planners in the industry to refinance your debt, strategize or harvest your equity, and CPAs to help you keep more of your hard-earned dollars. With taxes on the rise, managing your tax bill will be more important than ever! Brion also has six dedicated internal staff members who help him deliver on his promise of being readily available and deliver world-class service to his clients. Brion hosts an event once a month for his existing clients and prospects to make sure that they are up-to-date on all of the best ideas and investments.”

Brion often shares with his clients that retirement planning these days is like trying to climb Mount Everest. It takes years of preparation, discipline and focus to get to the top (or in Retirement Planning, to save enough money to carry clients throughout retirement). Most climbers who try to get to the top of Mount Everest don’t run into problems on the way up the mountain, but rather on the way back down. This analogy is very true for Retirement Planning as well; most retirees don’t fail accumulating assets, most retirees fail on the way back down (during the distribution phase). Many people fail to take into consideration the multiple dangers during the distribution phase, such as longevity, inflation, taxes, market volatility, health risks and sequence of returns. Not enough retirees are taking the time to crunch the numbers to analyze how long their money will last at different rates of return, inflation rates, and dollar amounts.

Brion starts most relationships with a proprietary process he calls the Family Index. “Once you have clarity around a client’s existing family index (i.e., how long their money’s going to last) it makes it easier to go out and find the appropriate products to solve the clients financial picture.” Working with an expert like Brion will help to ensure that you’ve got the knowledge and plan in place to make that very important journey back down the mountain. A lot of his clients have started referring to Brion as their “Retirement Sherpa.”

When speaking to a group of new prospects, Brion will often leave them with one question: “Are there any of you who are so happy with your advice and service that you are getting from your existing retirement advisor that you’ve ever written them a hand-written ‘Thank You’ note?” Whether it’s an audience of 100 or 20, very few hands ever go up. A lot of people out there are settling for mediocrity. They are not getting good service and they are not being treated the way they deserve to be treated. Over the last 14 years, and a lot of hard work, Brion has collected hundreds of handwritten Thank You notes. It is a simple measurement but it is accurate and true. “If you are looking for that kind of relationship, or would just like a second opinion, I encourage you to get to know us and experience the difference of PPG.”

Q: What exactly is a Retirement Distribution Specialist?

A: Most people spend 25 years of their working life accumulating assets in their IRA’s, 401(k)’s, ROTHs and Brokerage Accounts. This represents a distinct period in your financial life when you’re trying to accumulate wealth. As you’re getting in or near retirement, the accumulation phase becomes less important and you tend to focus more on preserving what you’ve worked so hard to accumulate and developing a strategy for the most efficient distribution for the next 25 years of your life. This requires careful planning and unique knowledge to not fall victim to the multiple dangers of the distribution phase such as longevity, inflation, taxes, market volatility, health risks and sequence of returns. That is what a Distribution Specialist does.- Brion Harris
