Feb 09, 2012 05:27PM ● By Anonymous
Get set to be transformed back to the early 19th century during the 1812 Spring Soiree to be held Saturday, April 28th from 6-9 p.m. The sponsor of the event is the Nanticoke Historic Preservation Alliance, with all proceeds going to the Handsell Restoration Fund. Handsell is one of the few remaining 18th century brick dwellings near Vienna in Dorchester County, and was once the busy trading site along the Nanticoke River for native Americans, English settlers, and African Americans.

This year’s event will be held at the Cambridge House B&B, an 1847 sea captain’s house located at 112 historic High Street near the waterfront.

Guests will be greeted by professional re-enactors, Carolyn and Monte Hailey of Cordova, MD They will entertain in period dress and portray Mr. and Mrs. James Steele, owners of Handsell in the 19th century and of a home in Cambridge on High Street, which was once located next to the Cambridge House. Their repertoire will include gossip and the life and times of Cambridge and Dorchester County during that era. The material for their performance comes directly from extensive research obtained from historic letters and papers of the Steele family.

Live music will complement the event with classical guitarist Linda Andrews and harpist Betty Boda. There will be an elegant cocktail buffet, including a special drink of the era, as well as beer and wine.

The NHPA holds soirees once a year, changing with the seasons and always in an historic location in Dorchester County.
