Athletes Worth Watching: Ben Nelson

Ben’s just beginning his first year on varsity for his high school team, but he already has a ton of experience on the diamond. Several years ago, he was a member of an undefeated 10-U team which won the Anne Arundel County championship, and he spent much of last summer barnstorming the mid-Atlantic. A catcher for the Potter Pirates (an old-school wooden-bat tour team which played in major league and high school venues), Ben caught for nearly a dozen other pitchers.
Ben’s not the tallest guy on his team—he stands around 5’7”—but he knows it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog. “I know I’m not the biggest or best kid,” he says, “but I work as hard as everyone else. And you don’t get better if you don’t work at it.”
Ben—who carries an impressive 3.9 GPA in school—says his non-sports interests include science and history, his two favorite subjects. He hopes to attend college in South Carolina in a couple years, where he hopes to pursue a degree in marine biology. Ben lives in Gambrills with his older brother, 21-year-old Chris, and his parents, Robert and Matilda.
