With the sheer number of potential consumers, expect pharmaceutical treatments for obesity to be a flourishing fi eld. In the meantime, health professionals throughout the world struggle with the daunting task of trying to rewire both our brains and our lives so that we will eat better and exercise more.
On the other hand, Airbus, the French-based aerospace giant, has decided to acknowledge and accommodate this growing population by increasing the width of the aisle seats in its new A320 aircraft from 18 inches to 20 inches wide. Unfortunately, this will also mean that middle and window seats will go down to 17 inches. And, of course, the larger aisle seats will cost more. According to Airbus, approximately 20 airlines have expressed interest in the new layout. (Wonder why I just got a fl ash of the spaceship passengers in the Pixar fi lm, WALL•E?)
