The luncheon, presented on National Philanthropy Day by Chaney Enterprises, was held at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis, and honored some of the area’s most philanthropic individuals, business, and foundations.

The Foundation of the Year Award went to the William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation, which has awarded nearly $300,000 to 10 local nonprofits since 2009, and was accepted by Tim and Cindy O’Neill.

The Corporate Philanthropist of the Year Award went to Severn Savings Bank, which provided $85,000 to 40 charities in Anne Arundel County during its last fiscal year, and is on track to nearly double that amount this fiscal year. (The amount represents 10 percent of the bank’s net revenue.) That award was accepted by Severn Savings Bank Chairman Alan Hyatt.

The Volunteers of the Year Award went to Bobbie and Jerry Burnett who, for the past 30 years, have dedicated their lives to raising money to help fight cancer through their Organization, The Caring Collection. The two—along with an army of volunteers—hand make and sell glass angels and sun catchers, through which they’ve raised 1.1 million dollars for Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The Philanthropists of the Year Award was given to Jim and Sylvia Earl, who established the Helena Foundation in honor of Jim’s mother in 1988. Through their foundation, they’ve provided millions of dollars in grants to organizations in and around Anne Arundel County. Last year, they gave more than $1.3 million.
