This year, instead of just jumping back into the same routine you’ve tried in the past (and failed at), try something new. There are some incredible opportunities around Annapolis if you just take the time to get up off the couch, and hardly any of them mandate a monthly commitment. And with the moderate winters we have in this corner of the world (trust me, this is moderate. I come from Boston), it’s a great time to get outdoors and see what the area has to offer.
So what are you waiting for? Skip the treadmill and try our bucket list instead. You’ll have such a better January for it.
Ice Skating at Quiet Waters Park Ok, answer honestly. When was the last time you went to Quiet Waters? Did you even know that you can ice skate there? Admission is only $6 and you can rent skates for $3. If you’re not a skater but the rest of your family is, take a walk or go for a run on the paved trails that make a loop around the park (4.2 miles).
CrossFit Annapolis CrossFit is the new fitness craze that you should really know about. Promoting a high intensity, quick workout (think dead lifts, burpees, pull ups and squats) CrossFit enthusiasts achieve elite levels of fitness under the close supervision of coaches. To start at the Annapolis facility, you’re first required to get an overall fitness assessment conducted by one of their specialists. Since the assessment is free, there should be nothing stopping you from at least booking your appointment, right? Hey, if it gets you one micro step closer to those six pack abs…
Speaking of six pack abs, why not make 2013 be the year you get into Pilates? The core workout designed by a WW1 veteran is known for rebuilding bodies and relieving chronic back pain, but did you know that it’s also a whole lot of fun? Excel Pilates in West Annapolis is a great place to start, and they’re even hosting an open house on the 12th.
Stress at work killing you? Maybe you’d do better to burn of it off playing racquetball. The Severna Park Racquetball and Fitness Club has been in operation for the last 30 years for a reason. With both open courts and league play, you’ll find beginners through advanced players to test your skills against.
Maybe 2013 is the year you get over your fear of heights. The year you decide to take calculated risks. If that’s the case, they’re waiting for you at Earth Treks Climbing Center in Columbia . With 44-foot high walls and over 20,000 square feet of climbing surface, there’s fun for all levels of climbers. For the highly experienced mountaineers, maybe this is your year to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro…
If you’re a mover and a shaker but your knees aren’t anymore, maybe you’d try one of the many incredible classes that Maryland Hall offers . With Theatre, Ceramics, Drama, Photography, and many other course offerings to ignite your interest, Maryland Hall is a great place to be at the center of it all. And honestly, you’re never too old to learn to tap dance.
You can’t swing a cat in downtown Annapolis without hitting a runner. Seriously. This town loves its long runs. And it’s never too early to start looking ahead at your schedule and planning your PRs. The ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon and 10k on June 1st is a great place to do just that. With its course designed to give you a sense of all the beauty Annapolis has to offer, the post-race vendors are designed to give you the sense of what a good time Naptown can really be.
