How to Get a Jumpstart on Spring

Mar 12, 2013 09:51PM ● By Anonymous

Here are four simple ways to get started.

1. Create an Indoor Garden

There’s no reason to sit around anxiously waiting for spring to sprout outdoors when you can bring the green indoors. Get a head start on everything from herbs to vegetables to annuals to fruit by setting up an indoor garden near your sunniest window. If you don’t have an adequate windowsill, set up a table, bench, or shelving to create a space that’s functional as well as decorative.

2. Sip Down a Spring-like Cocktail

Start the transition from the fuller-bodied aperitifs of winter to the lighter, fruitier refreshments of spring with choices like Martha Stewart’s Lillet Rose Spring Cocktail or’s El Diablo Cocktail. With hints of floral, citrus, and berries, these drinks are sure to lift you out of your winter woes.

3. Make Your Wardrobe Pop

Don’t shy away from the shades of spring simply because the calendar says it’s still winter. Embrace the vibrancy of the season-to-come by adding a pop of color to your outfit, whether it be on a blouse, bag (like the one shown above by Kate Spade), or fabulous pair of shoes. For a bolder statement, try a pair of bright-colored pants or a blazer, like this purple suede one from Ralph Lauren’s Spring Collection.

4. Get in Preparation Mode

Although you can’t start cooking with spring crops just yet, you can start planning for their arrival by gathering some “must-try” recipes. My list includes Taste of Home’s Strawberry Arugula Salad, Real Simple’s Apricot Glazed Ham with Potatoes and Asparagus, and Better Home and Garden’s Mediterranean Salmon Noodle Bowl. Keep the preparation flowing outside the kitchen with simple touches like floral-scented candles or a spring-inspired front-door wreath that are sure to help usher in the new season.
