Vernon will be entering her senior year as a four-year varsity runner in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. She was named Best Newcomer for track her freshman year, Most Valuable Runner for the Patriots cross country team her first three years, and she doesn’t plan to slow down anytime soon.
She has competed in everything from the 400m to the 3200m and the 4x400 relay at Penn Relays. She is very active in and out of the classroom, maintaining a high GPA and leading her Fellowship of Christian Athletes group with outreach work. As far as a career choice goes, Vernon says she is most interested in pursuing the computer science or computer engineering fields.
Vernon hopes to follow the path of her brother, Cody, to the Naval Academy as a runner after she graduates from Old Mill, but would highly consider the University of North Carolina or University of South Carolina if continuing school in Annapolis is not in the cards. Her brother not only provides her running tips and motivation but he also familiarized her with legendary Olympian Steve Prefontaine, who was arguably the most revered runner of his generation and help kickstart the running boom of the 1970s.
“He pushed through everything and did his best. That’s why I look up to [Prefontaine],”
