Being out on the water for Strachan isn’t just a hobby. It’s a way of life.

Having sailed for as long as she can remember, it’s no surprise she became the captain of Key’s varsity sailing team and sails throughout the summer as well. Her competitions make her well-traveled, taking her up and down the East Coast, from Nova Scotia to Buzzards Bay and even all the way to Corpus Christi.

Sailing on 420s, Strachan plays the role of crew while her teammate works as the skipper. Competing on a 4.2 meter two-person boat requires chemistry and a lot of back and forth between the two to be successful.

“There’s a lot of communicating that needs to go on in the boat between the skipper and the crew,” Strachan says, “[about] where the wind is and any other boats that are around you. That’s definitely a skill that goes into it.”

Strachan will sail for George Washington University’s varsity sailing team and attend the School of Business. She ultimately plans to graduate GW as an International Business major.

On land, Belle is involved in the school chorus and teaching Peace Initiative, a student-run organization to help teach younger students about peace.

She also enjoys photography, the nautical kind not surprisingly.

“Capturing the moment is what I aim for,” she says.
