After starting last season 3-1, the Navy Midshipmen dropped to 2-3 for the third time in four years following their 36-27 loss to Western Kentucky on Saturday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

The Hilltoppers came into Annapolis with a high-octane offense, topping 700 yards in two games this season averaging 608.7 yards and 46.7 points per game, good enough to rank third and ninth in the country, respectively.

The Mids were outgained 551 to 467 in total yardage but had the chance to tie the game late after Keenan Reynolds' two-yard touchdown run with 4:31 remaining put them down 29-27. Navy failed the two-point conversion attempt but the defense forced Western Kentucky to punt.

With 1:36 remaining, Navy had the chance to drive down the field and kick the game-winning field goal but those hopes were squandered when Reynolds threw an interception returned for a touchdown with 45 seconds remaining.

Navy has lost their last two games and travel to take on rival Air Force at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday. In a game that came close to being canceled due to the federal government shutdown, the Mids topped the Falcons 28-10 in last year's meeting at Annapolis.
