This month, What’s Up? with Eastern Shore Real Estate focuses on two properties that are great examples of the charm of rustic, rural living. Both of these Eastern Shore gems offer natural spaces, quiet retreat potential and great opportunities to explore the charms of life away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Though the settings are very different, each of these properties showcases the reasons why Eastern Shore real estate holds a strong appeal for many different kinds of people.

This large pastoral slice of Caroline County was once a functioning turkey farm, and features wide open fields around the nucleus of a charming, classic farmhouse and outbuildings. The property features over 96 acres of arable, tillable land. That land has most recently been used for crops including grain and corn, but is not under agricultural preservation.

In addition to the farmhouse, the property offers a number of helpful features for farming operations and sportsmen alike. Among the five outbuildings near the farmhouse is a meat storage and processing facility, approximately 40’x25’x10’, that includes its own bath and walk in cold storage freezers. Other outbuildings are suitable for equipment storage, with a large pavilion structure that can be used for farm equipment or entertaining.

The property also offers its new owners the opportunity to enjoy access to other outdoor pursuits. The farm features private creek frontage for small boats and swimming. Two private ponds on the property offer fishing opportunities. Several large stands of mature hardwood trees provide shade, natural beauty, and hunting possibilities.

The farmhouse, built in 1948, is a charming Cape Cod, nestled in the shade of several mature pines. It offers old country charm straight from its traditional pediment entryway. With three bedrooms, including one on the first floor, and one bath, the house follows a classic Cape Cod layout. The home also features a full basement. An eat-in country kitchen completes the main floor layout.

The property’s new owner intends to continue farming the land. The new owner has installed irrigation equipment to enhance the potential of the growing season. The farmhouse will be used as a rental property.
