Endodontic Specialists

Dr. J. Fredrick Heaton, known to his friends and patients as “Rick” has been a specialist in Endodontics on the Eastern Shore for over 34 years. Dr. Heaton’s primary mission is to save the teeth of both adults and children by performing root canal therapy and surgery. He also is directly involved in treating oral trauma, often seen with sports injuries and other accidents. Dr. Heaton is often called upon for diagnosis of oral pain in complex dental cases. Recognition as an Endodontist requires, at least, two additional years of specialized training in a residency approved by the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontists. In addition to his main office in Easton, Dr. Heaton maintains a satellite office at 202 St. Claire Place in Stevensville. The Kent Island office provides greater access for Eastern Shore patients requiring endodontic treatment.

Dr. Heaton and his staff are committed to saving your teeth in a gentle and caring environment utilizing the most current dental technology.

1. What is the best advice you’ve received?

In dental school, you learn how to treat teeth on manikins and models in a preclinical setting before you ever see a patient. One day in the patient clinic and intently involved doing the best possible treatment of a complicated procedure, one of my favorite instructors quietly reminded me, ”Rick, try to remember there is a person attached to that tooth!!” I have tried to never forget those words of wisdom.

2. What philanthropic causes do you support?

Debbie and I support many charities but the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, the DelMarVa Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Talbot Hospice, and Habitat for Humanity of the Choptank are major causes dear to us.

Dr. Heaton graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1970 and served in nuclear submarines in Charleston, S.C. and Rota, Spain until 1975. Upon completing his naval service, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Dental Medicine in Charleston. After graduation in 1979, he completed two years of advanced specialty training in Endodontics at the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore. Dr. Heaton then practiced in Washington, D.C., with a group practice. During that time he discovered the Eastern Shore and decided this was the place to put down his roots and raise his family. Dr. Heaton is a member of the Eastern Shore Dental Association, American Dental Association, Maryland Dental Association, and the American Association of Endodontists.
