An Inside Scoop with Maryland's Beloved Country Artist, John Luskey

Southern Maryland native John Luskey has country built into his bones and pulsing through his veins. His parents instilled in him this passion for music, and by the age of 13 he was a talented guitarist writing his first song. By 18, he was performing often enough to be known throughout many Maryland suburbs.

On a weekly basis, Luskey performs at various popular venues in the Maryland and Virginia areas, and plays for private events. The John Luskey Band, composed of Luskey, Jack Bannister (bass) and Dwayne Taylor (drums), has performed with noteworthy artists such as Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Zac Brown Band, and Sugarland to name a few.

Luskey currently has a few projects to look forward to. Fans will be happy to know that he will release a fifth album and plans on debuting his new song “Legend of the Blue Dog” at the end of the summer. He is also excited to announce that he’ll be the opening act for the Eli Young Band at the Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa, September 4th.

The What's Up? Weekend Rundown

Anne Arundel County

Hop(e), Skip & Jump 5K and Fun Walk
Saturday, July 29th, 7 a.m.
Join Anne Arundel Recreation and Parks for the fifth annual Hop(e), Skip & Jump 5K and Fun Walk at Kinder Farm Park. This is a great event for all ages. The 5k race course is on a series of paved and unpaved trails with scenic views throughout the park. Participants may run or walk and will be timed. The Fun Walk course is a one-mile loop through the park with fun views of the barns and farm animals. Plus, the little ones get to join in for a 25-yard dash for kids up to four years old, a 50-yard dash for kids five and over, a hula hoop contest, and other fun events! The Hop(e), Skip & Jump 5K and Fun Walk are part of their Move More Race Series that benefits Recreation Deeds for Special Needs, a local non-profit whose goal is to make recreational opportunities accessible to all Anne Arundel County residents.

Henry Cho: Laughs & Drafts Comedy Series
Sunday, July 30th, 8 p.m.
Henry’s TV credits include appearances on NBC’s The Tonight Show, CBS’s The Late, Late, Show, and NBC’s Young Comedians Special. He served two years as host of NBC’s Friday Night Videos and had many guest roles on various network sitcoms. Henry was co-creator, co-producer and co-writer of “The Henry Cho Show” on GAC. Henry’s clean comedy is so versatile that he can headline Vegas and then tour with Michael W. Smith in the same month. Henry is also in high demand by corporation’s due to the fact he is bankable and his show is clean. He has performed for hundreds of companies.

Clicquot on the Creek 
Saturday, July 29th, 2–5 p.m.
Enjoy an afternoon of picnicking, music, & Veuve Clicquot Champagne on the expansive lawn of the Charles Carroll House and Gardens overlooking Spa Creek in downtown Annapolis. Guests can enjoy a delicious picnic snack pack or add additional items for a complete picnic lunch, packaged in a complimentary insulated tote. Anne Arundel/Annapolis Community Response Team Basic Training
Friday, July 28th, 6–8 p.m., Saturday, July 29th, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday, July 30th, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
Since 2006, hundreds of local residents have completed CERT training and many continue to be active through participation in volunteering events and training exercises. CERT training is open to AAA residents and those who work in the County who are at least 18 years of age (16 and above if accompanied by at least one parent/guardian), and willing to assist those in their community in the event of a major disaster. The training covers general emergency preparedness, triage and basic first aid, light search and rescue, fire suppression and utility shutoff, terrorism, team management and organization, and disaster psychology. Completion of each class is required in order to participate in the final disaster simulation and complete the training.

Alice and the Book of Wonderland

ASC’s retelling reveals a fast-paced tale designed to delight young and old in an exciting new version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in which an inquisitive young woman named Alive is drawn into a fantastical world where logic is illogical and the absurd makes sense. Through a series of dramatic vignettes creatively linked together by ASC, Alice makes her way through the fantastical terrain of Wonderland.

Great Train Robbery: Summer Concert Series at Quiet Waters Park
Saturday, July 29th, 6–8 p.m.
Join the Friends of Quiet Waters Park this summer for a fantastic line up of performing artists at the annual Summer Outdoor Concert Series. Grab your blankets and lawn chairs for an enjoyable evening at the parks outdoor concert venue. GTR has entertained audiences for over 35 years. Bringing it with their classic smokey southern sound. The Baltimore based outfit has released 8 albums. The band is proud to have shared the stage with many well-known acts such as The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker, BTO, Blackfoot, and many more.

Historic London Town and Gardens’ popular summer concert series returns! Enjoy music in the ornamental gardens overlooking the South River on Sunday afternoons in July. Bring your family (and your dogs!) and spread out on our lawn for a relaxing time. Bring a picnic or visit a food truck! Drink purchases support London Town's programming.

Everything Local Dinner Cruise
Sunday, July 30th, 6:30 p.m.
Enjoy an “Everything Local” themed dinner and drinks while under full sail on the Chesapeake Bay with Schooner Woodwind at Annapolis Waterfront Hotel. This cruise will focus on food that you can grow yourself or purchase locally. Palate Pleasers in Eastport prides itself on sourcing produce, meats, and many other ingredients from the local area. Don’t forget to try a delicious drink from One Eight Distilling, which is the only “grain to glass” distillery, using locally sourced ingredients! Black Ankle Vineyards will also be aboard showcasing two of their favorite wines.

Born and raised in St. Michaels, this son of a waterman started playing music when he was in elementary school. After a promising stint as a serious baseball player, Anthony renewed his interest in music and studied with some excellent saxophone teachers in Baltimore and Washington D.C. Soon Anthony was developing his smooth jazz saxophone style with local bands in the D.C. and Baltimore metro areas and bands in California on the weekends. Let’s give this Eastern Shore native a warm welcome home when he takes the stage in the Stoltz!

2017 Chrome City Ride for Benedictine
Sunday, July 30th, 8 a.m.
Motorcycles and classic and custom cars gather at various registration locations to ride in escorted convoys to the Benedictine School on the Eastern Shore as part of the Chrome City Ride for Benedictine. Event fee includes t-shirt, catered lunch, entertainment, prizes and more. Proceeds benefit children and adults with developmental disabilities.


Trifecta Food Truck Festival
Saturday, July 29th, 11 a.m.–9 p.m.
Baltimore County's Largest Food Truck Festival returns! Featuring Maryland's best gourmet food trucks plus a "Dangerous Delicious" infield stage with tons of live music. Mackenzie Ziegler and Johnny Orlando
Friday, July 28th, 6 p.m.
Johnny first expressed his passion for music at the tender age of eight, after posting his first YouTube cover with the help of his older sister. In December of 2016 he released “Day and Night” with Dance Moms star Mackenzie Ziegler. Following in her older sister’s footsteps, Mackenzie has been dancing since the age of two. 2017 marked the start of live touring for Mackenzie as she embarked on the “Day & Night” tour with Johnny Orlando.

What’s Up? Spirit Festival
