What To Know Before You Go: Maryland Seafood Festival & Arts Alive Gala

This weekend celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Maryland Seafood Festival with two days of fun-filled activities, food, vendors, and so much more! A portion of the proceeds will go to the YMCA Camp Letts. Also this weekend, enjoy A Night In Havana at Maryland Hall's largest fundraising event of the year, Arts Alive 19! This year's event kicks off in a giant "tent under the stars" on Maryland Hall's front driveway with an extensive silent auction of unique and rare items and experiences. We have everything you need to know about these two events before you go.


The What's Up? Weekend Rundown


Arts Alive Gala
Friday, September 8th, 6–11 p.m.
This year’s 19th annual Arts Alive Gala kicks off in a giant “tent under the stars” on Maryland Hall’s front driveway with an extensive silent auction of unique and rare items and experiences. Tasting stations featuring signature dishes and drinks donated by area restaurants, caterers, and hotels will allow guests to sample delicious food throughout the evening.

Cheese and Wine Pairing: Cheese 101
Friday, September 8th, 6:30–8 p.m.
It's back to school time with our American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professional Mia Jones as she explores the world of cheese and cheese making. Learn a little history, a little cheese making, about the different styles of cheeses, and of course, try some delicious cheese! Cheeses will be served with appropriate condiments and our friends at Bin 201 will provide specially selected beverage pairings.

50th Annual Maryland Seafood Festival
Saturday, September 9th, 10am–9 p.m. & Sunday, September 10th, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Maryland Seafood Festival at Sandy Point State Park, featuring two days of live alligators with Jimmy Riffle and his crew from Animal Planet’s Gator Boys. Celebrate "50" with 50 things to do, including listening to live music, shopping at the Chesapeake Arts Village, sampling gourmet dishes at the Chef Demos, tasting Maryland Crab Soup at the Crab Soup Cook-off, and fireworks! Activities for the whole family abound including a treasure hunt, crab races, face painting, kid’s activities and more!

Maryland Renaissance Festival
Saturday, September 9th, & Sunday, September 10th, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
The region’s premier outdoor event and second largest Renaissance Festival in the country is celebrating its 41st season at Revel Grove. Travel back in time as you immerse yourself in the culture of a 16th-century English village, complete with King Henry VIII and his court. A playground of fun, frivolity, and wondrous performances thrill more than 300,000 visitors each year. The almost continuous entertainment on all 10 stages features many returning favorite performers! Music fills the village, from sea chanties to Celtic drums, you’ll move to the rhythm of more than 100 musical performers.

Eastern Shore

Chestertown Jazz Festival
Thursday, September 7th, through Sunday, September 10th, times vary
On Thursday, September 7th through Sunday, September 10th, the Chestertown Jazz Festival declares that “Jazz Lives!” now more than ever with acts featuring young artists as well as favorite established musicians. The festival will kick off on Thursday at the Mainstay with triple threat, Katie Thiroux. Friday night at the Garfield Center for the Arts, Hannah Gill and the Hours will rock the house with their combination of 70s lo-fi pop and rock with contemporary soul and blues. On Saturday, the music begins at Wilmer Park with a gospel music opening followed by Capitol Focus, John Thomas Quartet, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet, Jazz Academy of Music, and Joey DeFrancesco.

Boating Party Fundraising Gala
Saturday, September 9th, 5–10:30 p.m.
The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's signature fall gala includes cocktails, dinner, and dancing under the tents at Navy Point. This year join CBMM for “A Tolchester Summer Evening” and sizzle and swing under the bandstand in the company of friends old and new. Tickets are $250 per person. Funds raised support CBMM’s mission to inspire an understanding of and appreciation for the rich maritime heritage of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal reaches, together with the artifacts, cultures, and connections between this place and its people.

Run4Shelter Moonlight Edition
Saturday, September 9th, 5:30 p.m.
This is the ninth annual Run4Shelter event which benefits Haven Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit organization in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. Haven Ministries, which provides hope through shelter, food, clothing, and support to men, women, and children, operates a homeless shelter, food pantry, thrift store, street outreach and transportation program, and a resource center. Proceeds from the event are used to keep all of the programs operational. The 10K race starts at 5:30 p.m. with the 5K following at 6 p.m.

Dorchester County Out of the Darkness Walk
Saturday, September 9th, 2–5 p.m.
Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you. Join the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on Saturday, September 9th, 3 p.m. at the Hurlock Train Station while walking to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. Be a part of a movement turning hope into action and creating a culture that’s smart about mental health. Funds raised at the walk will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national research, education and advocacy programs, and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025.

Sunday, September 10th, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
CrowFest is an annual festival to celebrate the bounty of the Eastern Shore and the beginning of the harvesting of Crow Vineyard & Winery’s grapes. Come spend the day enjoying the award-winning Crow wines and the talents of additional Eastern Shore vendors. There will be live music, local food, vendors, and multiple activities for kids, hayrides, grape stomping, and more!

Western Shore

Depeche Mode Global Spirit Tour
Thursday, September 7th, 7:30 p.m.
The Global Spirit Tour has already sold over 1.5 million tickets and has sold-out shows across Europe – just the start of what is poised to be a record-breaking global tour. This tour is in support of the band’s upcoming 14th studio album "Spirit".

Taking Back Sunday
Friday, September 8th, 8 p.m.
Taking Back Sunday has always been the Pearl Jam of the scene in the sense that they've consistently plugged along and continued to reinvent themselves regardless of what was trendy at the time.

Brad Paisley, Dustin Lynch, Chase Bryant, Lindsay Ell 
Saturday, September 9th, 7 p.m.
Multi-platinum-selling country superstar Brad Paisley has announced another leg of his hugely popular Life Amplified World Tour. After the incredible success of last year's run, Paisley will once again be joined on his North American stint by pal Dustin Lynch, up-and-comer Chase Bryant and Canadian songstress Lindsay Ell, bringing a stellar line up, for one of the hottest country shows of the year!

Taste the Beaches Festival
Saturday, September 9th, 1 p.m.–5 p.m.
Explore Chesapeake Beach and North Beach during the area’s “Taste the Beaches” festival! A coming together of restaurants, breweries, beverage shops, and craft experts, the event is the perfect excuse for families and friends to enjoy food and drink from local restaurants while enjoying all that the area has to offer!

Stefanie Ashdown Memorial "Do Your Best" 5k
Saturday, September 9th, 8–10 a.m.
Stef Ripple will host its inaugural Stefanie Ashdown Memorial "Do Your Best" 5k and 1-mile walk. The race will be held in Arnold, beginning at the Belvedere Elementary school. Proceeds raised will be used to provide support to ovarian cancer patients and their families by funding camps and activities for their children.

Kids Fishing Derby
Saturday, September 9th, 7:30–11:30 a.m.
The Pasadena Sportfishing Group (PSG) Kid's Fishing Derby will take place at Fort Smallwood Park for children ages four to thirteen years old. A pre-registration fee of $5 per child is required which will be refunded at sign-in. Bait and fishing lessons will be provided by PSG members. Food, drinks and snacks will be provided for lunch and prizes and awards will follow.

Summer Concerts in the Parks
Sunday, September 10th, 4:30–6:30 p.m.
Bring your own lawn chair or blanket, pack a picnic and join us for the sounds of Blues, Big Band, Classical, Motown, Oldies, Rock, and much more. Enjoy live Motown music by The Sunset Band.

What’s Up? Spirit Festival

What’s Up? Media will host their first Spirits Festival at Annapolis Maritime Museum on Thursday, October 26th, 2017 from 6-9 p.m.. "Humans" Meet the Artist Reception

On September 19th, What's Up? Media will host a Meet the Artist Reception featuring the local artists participating in our newest gallery, "Humans." Light refreshments will be available while admiring the talent and mingling with the artists. Be sure to vote for your favorite piece to determine the next "Best in Show" winner.
