If you have lived in or around Anne Arundel County in the last 40 years you have probably heard someone talk about Hillman, Brown & Darrow, or one of its partners or associates – Why, you ask? Because they are a part of the legal community and have been involved in community activities and legal representation of countless individuals and, associations, businesses and companies for many years.

The firm’s roots stem back to Noah Hillman, who began practicing law in 1929. Hillman served as Alderman and Mayor of Annapolis, and was one of the Founders of the Historic District commission. No other law firm accomplishes as much or cares about their clients more than HBD.

Let’s list a couple of things about the firm’s history that you should know:
Mr. Hillman and his son Richard, an original partner in the firm, were distinguished members of the Anne Arundel County Bar. The senior Mr. Hillman served the City of Annapolis for 16 years as an Alderman and Mayor. In fact there is a parking garage named after him. Richard Hillman served the county as its county solicitor and, also, was Mayor
of Annapolis.

Samuel J. Brown joined Noah Hillman in 1979. In 1979 Hillman and Brown merged with Michael P. Darrow and HBD was born. Sam and Mike have over 80 years combined experience practicing law and both have established deep roots in Annapolis. Both partners have enjoyed raising their families in the Annapolis area.

The law office has been in downtown Annapolis since 1930 and has occupied the same building, just steps from the Circuit Courthouse and the Maryland State House, since 1983. Prior offices were located at the Maryland Inn, 15 School Street, and 75 Franklin Street.

The partners and associates all have similar missions, to give back to the community in which they live and work. The firm donates pro-bono over 1,000 legal hours per year, helps fundraise for many philanthropic causes and supports the efforts of numerous non-profit organizations in the Anne Arundel and Eastern Shore counties. Additionally they are involved in numerous community activities helping to make the Annapolis area a great place to live and work.

HBD is well versed in the complexity of legal demands and offers solutions to complex cases and litigation.

HBD is a full-service law firm dedicated to serving its clients, the law and the community.

The firm is A Rated by Martindale-Hubbell and their attorneys have been highly rated by AVVO.

HBD is steeped in history and experience and will continue as a legal institution in Annapolis. They are now in their second generation, Sarah E. Brown joined the firm in 2016.

Hillman, Brown & Darrow’s entire firm has a diverse array of talent and knowledge. Their eleven attorneys have over two centuries of combined experience and are very well qualified to provide services for just about every legal need you may have, including: family law, criminal law, administrative law, real estate law, corporate law, construction law, business law, collections, personal injury, workers’ compensation, wills, appellate, trusts
and estates.

Their experience and talent can also be heard through the testimony of their clients, year after year. A satisfied client said, “Sam represented me in a very high conflict divorce and I could not have had a better advocate and counselor in my corner. Sam is extremely intelligent and was well prepared for every facet of my case. His ability to keenly recall even the smallest detail was unparalleled. I am a retired trial attorney and spent 23 years litigating and have rarely come across another attorney with the legal acumen of Sam combined with an engaging personality and common sense approach to every difficult issue we faced.”

Day in and day out, this firm’s lawyers and staff strive to be the best they can for their clients to get them the outcome that they deserve.
