Boaters’ Delight

It’s the party of the year in Annapolis, for two full weekends to boot! This October 8th–12th, the 40th Annual United States Sailboat Show will flood the City Dock area of Downtown Annapolis with over 250 new sailboat models and marine exhibitors. But wait there’s more. The following weekend, October 15th–18th, sees the 38th Annual Powerboat Show take over town. Both boat shows are the largest in-water shows in the world; obviously can’t-miss events for those nautical at heart. 410-268-8828 or usboat.com.

Quixotic Sonic Spectacular

The Annapolis Chorale will kick off its 37th season with the Don Quixote-inspired musical Man of La Mancha at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis on October 9th and 10th. The adaption of Miguel de Cervantes’ seventeenth century masterpiece, Don Quixote, tells the story of the “mad” knight as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. The original musical debuted on Broadway in 1965. 410-263-1906 or annapolischorale.org.

Two-step to Tango

Has creative, interpretive, and traditional dancing ever been more popular than now? Thanks, in part, to the hit-TV show, So You Think You Can Dance, dancing (all styles included) is all the rage. And your chance to see the stars of this hit show is October 15th at Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena. So You Think You Can Dance Tour 2009 will feature the top 10 contestants performing gravity defying dance moves. 410-547-SEAT or baltimorearena.com.

Horsing Around

It’s one of the most popular equestrian events in the Mid-Atlantic; the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS), now in its 51st year, is back at D.C.’s Verizon Center this October 20th–25th. Dazzling horse-riding competition (hunter, jumper, dressage), crowd pleasing Jack Russell terrier races, exhibitions, and one-stop shopping for anything and everything horse-related, make this the go-to event for horse whisperers young and young at heart. 410-547-SEAT or wihs.org.

Superhero Celebration

Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, X-Men; yup, all the men will be there. And let’s not forget the ladies; Wonder Woman, Ms. Marvel, Storm, and all their friends will be in town as well, for the 10th Annual Baltimore Comic-Con at the Baltimore Convention Center. Hundreds of comic book fans, vendors, exhibitors, writers, illustrators, and industry gurus will descend to the Inner Harbor on October 10th and 11th for this fantastic fantasy event. 410-547-SEAT or baltimorecomiccon.com.

Closed for the Season

Lament the end of the sailing season during this multi-day festival in which eight Tall Ships and historic vessels from nearby ports visit Chestertown and its schooner Sultana from October 28 through November 1. In addition to opportunities for the public to view, board, and sail on the ships, the weekend also includes lectures, film screenings, firework displays, and a parade through town.
