A Christmas Tour Through the Centuries
What’s it like to be 300 years old? Chestertown thinks its birthday is really something to be proud of so it’s been celebrating since April. Festivities have ranged from crab feasts to a parade featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales. The home of stately mansions whose tiered verandahs overlook the banks of the Chester River, this beautiful town is considered the jewel of Kent County.
Ann Baldwin has been coordinating one the last events of the anniversary celebration, the 23rd Annual Holiday House Tour. Scheduled for Saturday December 9, from 1 to 5 p.m., the tour is a project of H.H. Garnett Elementary School’s PTA, which uses the proceeds to help the school’s children with special needs.
Baldwin explains that this year’s event will focus on a dozen homes and buildings in the Historic District.
Two of the homes on tour are owned by Washington College, established in 1782. Hynson-Ringgold House, residence of the president, is an imposing structure that has tripled in size since the early 1740s, when it was built. The Customs House, sporting a façade of Flemish bond brickwork and built in the 1740s, is believed to have been the residence of the customs collector, who was responsible for collecting import duties when Chestertown was a major port town.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Cliff’s School House, a small frame building that served as one-room school housing grades one through seven from 1878 until 1939. The blackboard, stove, and desks haven’t changed since 1939 and McGuffey’s Ecletic Primers still lie on the desks, as do the old slates. The Christmas tree in the schoolhouse is even decorated with vintage ornaments.
The tour sites include Emmanuel Church, with its tiffany stained glass window, and Geddes-Piper House, a federal period townhouse owned by the Historical Society of Kent County. All the sites will be decorated for the holidays and the scents of fresh pine and mistletoe will mingle with the fragrance of the hot cider and homemade cookies provided for tour guests.
If you have never visited Chestertown, you will find a scenic drive up 213 north right off Route 301 north is well worth the effort. Today’s main thoroughfare, High Street, once lined with hardware and farm supply stores, is lined with restaurants and antique and gift shops. Fountain Park is in the center of town. Its ornate, cast-iron fountain is always decorated with red ribbons and evergreen garlands during the Christmas season.
You can buy tickets for $12.50 before December 1 by calling HH Garnett School at (410) 778-6890.
Group rate for ten or more is $l0. Cost is $15 on the day of the tour. Tickets are available at Emanuel Church. —Anne McNulty

Another First for Easton
So you’ve seen the ball drop in Times Square on New Year’s Eve and heard spectators cheer when the countdown begins. But when the clock strikes 12, have you ever seen the crab drop? To witness this (almost famous) tradition you’ll have to visit First Night Talbot, held in Easton, from 6 p.m. to midnight on New Year’s Eve. The drop will be performed at 9 p.m. for the youngsters and at midnight for the night owls.
“If you want a personal experience, come to Easton,” says Carolyn Jaffe—program chairperson. “It’s more of a small town atmosphere. It’s easier.”
Treasurer Marie U’Ren adds, “There’s room for you. It’s a user-friendly First Night.”
The crowds won’t be as large as in larger cities and parking[Query: “is less likely to”?] won’t be a problem. You’ll even be able to munch on tacos and chili.
Jaffe and U’Ren, along with many volunteers, are planning the festivities for this year’s event, the thirteenth annual one, and they’re excited about what they have in the works.
“We have high-quality entertainment. First Night is geared toward showcasing local and regional talent in a relaxing environment.”
The brightly colored Royal Express Train will be available to take visitors on a short ride. All seven venues are within a 2-block radius.
Plump tuxedos, painted in bright colors and decorated with unique designs, will be on display in storefront windows and at every venue. “They’re our way of inviting the community to come celebrate with us,” says U’Ren.
Jaffe wants to ensure that there will be a variety of acts to appeal to every interest. “We cover the gamut of performing arts.”
Competition dancer Amanda Showell will teach steps such as salsa and cha-cha line dancing. Gospel music that rocks the rafters will be performed by several local church choirs.
The Sunny Isle Blues Band will be swinging at the Historical Society venue and the Moonlighters will rock and roll with the sounds of the sixties and seventies at the Avalon Theatre.
Not only adults will be entertained, however: Jaffe has also planned activities that should appeal to youngsters.
Dragon Wings Puppeteers will perform Butterflies Don’t Bark, based on local author Sue Loweree’s book of the same title.
“Kids are amazing,” she says. “They get absolutely wrapped up in the reality of the story. They don’t even notice the marionette strings.”
But they’ll be sure to notice Beowulf T. Wonderbunny’s Traveling Show of Mystery, which the rabbit performs with his assistant, regional magician Tom Lilly. Beowulf describes himself as one “cool dude.”
Jaffe wants to make sure that the kids stay entertained for the whole evening. From 6–10 p.m. in the Waterfowl Building they’ll be able to jump around in the moon bounce, work on making crab crowns, and see sleight-of-hand magic.
Some talented young performers, such as violinist Meredith Buxton and pianist Crystal Ding, will be showcased, as well as the students of Dance Harrison Street Studio, who will fill the stage with exciting dance routines.
In addition to providing programs for kids and grownups, Jaffe has also remembered the town’s older residents.
That’s why she’s developed First Night Out. “Earlier in the afternoon, we take entertainment out to senior residences and nursing homes. This program has been very successful,” she notes.
So has First Night Talbot. The town expects 2000 visitors this year.
Admission buttons are sold for $10 at most venues. Student buttons are $5. Children under 5 are free.
