Situated on Church Circle and Franklin Street in Historic Annapolis, the charming Sly Fox Pub adjoins Reynolds Tavern of Annapolis, one of the most historic buildings within town. Built in 1737, Reynolds Tavern has long been a part of Annapolis’ service industry. The pub was opened in November of 2002 by two local brothers, Andrew and Chris Fox, and over the past several years has become a favorite for locals and tourist alike to enjoy a relaxing meal and drinks on the outdoor brick patio or indoor cavern-like pub, which is reminiscent of an old European tavern you might stumble upon in a city such as London.

On the day of our visit, we briefly experienced the beautiful weather and a very active garden patio, which is well suited for permitting weather and quite large—excellent for a fun little evening out to either break the week or relax on a weekend. We, however, eventually moved indoors for the pub experience. With the brick floors, historic stone walls, and dim lighting, Sly Fox Pub offers a very warm feel. Our cheerful waitress Cara floated from indoors to out and did a fine job servicing our table and those on the patio.

In a relaxed frame of mind, we decided to try as much as possible. So my dining companion and I started with a bowl of cream of crab soup, which was somewhat different from the traditional recipe, with a tinge of lemony taste and nice consistency.

For an appetizer, the spinach quesadilla was very nice. It also comes with options of beef or chicken added. We did found the salsa perhaps a little dry; however, I can see this as a very popular item if you just want something light to accompany your happy hour cocktail.

Fish and chips looked appealing on the menu and so it was one of our entrees: a great choice and lots of fun to eat. Our other entrée was more on the sophisticated side, to give balance to our selections: the Chilean sea bass. It was tenderly cooked, laced in a light butter sauce, and very enjoyable!

As a “palate cleanser” we decided to try the chicken Gorgonzola salad. Garnished with walnuts and served with a heavy blue cheese dressing, it was tasty with a good range of flavors from the toasted crunch of the nuts to the creamy earthiness of the cheese.

We finished our dinner with a delicious peach tart—it was the best one I have had in a very long time: so kudos to the chef. The second dessert we sampled was called “chocolate heaven.” It was rich, satisfying, and lived up to its name.

The wine list proved modest with well-known names and ample variety. You can also enjoy selections from the martini menu, which includes “key lime pie” and “oatmeal cookies” martinis: very interesting.

Sly Fox Pub offers entertainment seven nights a week and specials on a daily basis—you can find the entire schedule on its website.
