George Spangler Farm Civil War Field Hospital
Summer Season Closing Weekend- 136th NYSV Medical Hospital
136th NYSV Medical Hospital will be onsite to help you discover the stories of the soldiers, surgeons and civilians of Gettysburg–just minutes from the battlefield. Based in Charlotte, NC, the 136th portrays a regimental field hospital demonstrating surgeries, nursing techniques and duties, such as the use of mannequins and period instruments. A special feature of this presentation is a chance to see Dr. Hovey’s actual surgeon kit, still intact, after 155 years that was actually used at the Spangler Farm! A special program, “Civil War Apothecary: What and How Medicines were used during the Civil War” will also be held on Saturday, August 11 at 12:30 p.m. in the lower level of the barn. The site will be open for the 2018 summer season from June 8 – August 12 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Access is via shuttle from the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. Shuttle tickets (Adults $6/Youth $2) are available at the ticket counter, at GettysburgFoundation.org or by calling 877-874-2478.
