National Symphony Orchestra: Tchaikovsky's Fifth & Ax plays Mozart

John Storgårds, conductor Emanuel Ax, piano V. Silvestrov: The Messenger Mozart: Piano Concerto No.17 Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 is well known for its compositional wizardry: its energetic opening of constantly shifting harmonies, delicate marches, and joyous piano arabesques. In his personal journal, Mozart wrote that he taught his pet bird to sing the theme of the third movement—one that’s brimming with the spirit of a lark's springtime song. Emanuel Ax joins the NSO for this Mozart classic in a concert conducted by John Storgårds that also features the epic yearnings of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth. Performance Timing: Part One - 35 min.; Intermission - 15 min.; Part Two - 45 min.
