Taking place during the troubles in 1950s Ireland, The Hostage centers on the fate of an Irish Republican Army (IRA) prisoner sentenced to be hanged in a Belfast jail and the British conscript taken hostage by the IRA as a bargaining chip to save him. Set in a Dublin pub where the soldier is held by a host of Irish characters including ex-revolutionaries, IRA volunteers, and innocents, the pub acts as a sanctuary, a bawdy house, and in the end, a jail. An exuberant, dark comedy filled with song, and dealing with honor and betrayal, absurdity and fear, love and hate, and finally, life and death – The Hostage has it all.
