A Lively Place:

Adkins Arboretum

It’s dreary February again, but not at Adkins Arboretum. Here in February, foxes roam through the meadows. In the woodlands deer nibble on the undergrowth and beavers gnaw on logs in the bottomland.
“February’s an interesting time to visit,” says Ellie Altman, executive director. “You can walk into a beautiful forest and because the leaves are gone, you can see rolling vistas among the huge hickories and oaks. We do have a few hills here, and it’s a great place to cross-country ski.”

The 400-acre living museum, on the headwaters of Tuckahoe Creek near Denton, Maryland, is a sanctuary for Delmarva native plants. Its mission is to preserve these plants in their natural habitats.
You can also observe many species of birds that make their home there. You’ll see bald eagles perched on tree limbs, wild turkeys ambling through the meadows, and red-tailed hawks swooping for prey. The wetlands, meadows, and woodlands give them plenty of room to roam.

“This is a wonderful place to observe wildlife as well as plants,” says Altman. “It’s a great place for birding.”
Perhaps that’s why the visitors’ center, which will triple in size by late 2008, gets more than 16,000 visitors a year and has about 200 volunteers. “We serve a wide radius,” Altman states.

The center sits on an acre of wetlands. To reach it from the parking lot you take a short stroll over a wooden bridge. From there you can observe native plant species of the marsh, such as rushes and swamp magnolia.
Altman explains that self-guided audio tours are run all year. Docent-guided nature walks are available on Saturdays from April through November. The audio tour, which incorporates music, sound effects, and humor into its presentation, includes thirty-five stops on eight trails. Together the trails total 4 miles. If you wish, you can bike the paths or walk your leashed dogs.

Foxes can often be seen roaming through the meadows.

If you are a birder you will especially enjoy the South Meadow Walk. Another interesting trail is the Tuckahoe Creekside Walk. Strolling along the creek’s banks is a great opportunity to enjoy beautiful flood-plain views. A good woodlands path is the Upland Walk, which contains all the forests of the arboretum—from a piney woods to mature hardwood forest. Loblolly pines, white oak, and tulip poplar trees flourish here.

The Soup ’n Walk Tours, held on the third Saturday of every month, are especially popular. February’s theme is Sun Seekers Are Green in Winter: Greenbrier and Holly. At the end of the hike, the hikers will be greeted by the aroma of bubbly kale and chicken soup with lemon—and cherry pie for dessert.

“You get a lesson on nature while our nutritionist designs a unique and wholesome menu that ties into the theme of the walk,” Altman says.

The arboretum is also a great resource for master gardeners. Two landscaping classes will be held in February: An Introduction to Living Shorelines and Swales, Ponds, and Rain Gardens.

In addition, February brings the annual art show and competition. The theme this year is discovering the wild landscapes of the coastal plain. The juried competition will include sculpture, oils, watercolors, and photography. About twenty artists, many of them amateur, will vie for the Leon Andrus Award, which offers a $300 prize for first place and $200 for second. Critic and judge Deborah McLeon will award the prizes. The show begins February 12 and will be followed by a reception open to the public on February 24, from 5–7 p.m. Altman is already looking forward to spring. “It’s an absolute riot to be here and listen to the frogs. They almost sound like a symphony they’re so loud. Actually they sound more like a dissonant symphony,” she chuckles.

In early spring the skunk cabbage starts to grow. “It’s so lush here when it comes out. You can start noticing the foliage already in February. It looks like a large hosta.”

The center also offers educational programs for children as well as four week-long summer camps offered in June and July. The theme this year will be funshine-sunshine gardens. Here children learn about wildlife and “wetland critters” and how to plant gardens and catch and release frogs.

Altman hasn’t forgotten about educational programs for preschoolers either.

The berries of Winterberry (Ilex Verticillata) offer food for birds during the winter months.

“It’s so neat to hear tots pronounce the word arboretum, and they say it so easily.”
It must just be a natural thing.

Children also enjoy the playground, picnic area, and trails at Tuckahoe State Park, a mile away.

The center has many other programs throughout the year. Upcoming highlights are the May 5 spring plant sale and the Arbor Day 5k fun run on April 28.
