Baltimore, Maryland (July 21, 2011) – The Maryland Historical Society (MDHS) and 12 other Baltimore museums have joined the Blue Star Museums program, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and more than 1,480 museums nationwide to offer free admission to active duty military personnel and their families through Sept. 5. From our past exhibitions on Maryland World War II veterans to our current Civil War exhibit on Maryland soldiers, we commemorate some of the great achievements made by our brave military,” said Maryland Historical Society President, Burt Kummerow. “We are proud to be part of this great program dedicated to the men and women who protect our nation and freedom.”
The current 150th anniversary of the Civil War exhibition, Divided Voices: Maryland in the Civil War is ranked the number one Civil War attraction in the state by the Baltimore Sun.
MdHS is also offering a $2 discount to all adults with specially marked rack cards available in all Baltimore Hotels. That brings the price of admission to $4 for adults and $2 for children. Admission is always free the first Thursday of each month (August 4th).
Blue Star Museums is a program that offers free admission to museums for all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day, May 30, through Labor Day, September 5, 2011. The Maryland Historical Society is one of more than 1,480 museums across the United States to join the Blue Star Museum program. These include children's museums, fine art museums, history and science museums, and nature centers. In the Blue Star Museums' inaugural year for the summer of 2010, Over 300,000 military families visited partner museums.
The free admission program is available to active-duty military personnel and their spouse or child, aunts, uncles and grandparents. Active duty military include Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and active duty National Guard and active duty Reserve members.
The Maryland Historical Society and the following Baltimore museums are providing free access to military and their families; American Visionary Art Museum, B&O Railroad Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Industry, Evergreen Museum and Library, Homewood Museum, The Jewish Museum of Maryland, Mount Clare Museum, National Electronics Museum, National Museum of Dentistry, Sports Legends Museum/Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum, and Walters Art Museum.
