Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts will open three exhibitions on March 9.

Words and Paint / Uncommon Dialogue, a collaboration of paintings and writings by painter Jeanne Gentry Keck and Lance A. Miller in the Chaney Gallery; Changing Season, current work by Bonnie Roth Anderson in the Martino Gallery; and Teachers with HeART, an exhibit of work by teachers in the Balcony Gallery. A free reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibitions will be Friday, March 9 from 5:30-7 pm.

Words and Paint / Uncommon Dialogue, on display until April 15, is an installation resulting from a 13-month project where Keck painted as a result of inspiration from Miller’s work and Miller wrote from inspiration from Keck’s paintings. A book documenting their work was recently printed and will be available at the exhibition.

Jeanne Gentry Keck is a professional artist living in Crownsville with her studio in Baltimore, MD. She is represented by Brenda Taylor Gallery in New York, NY. Keck has had many one-person shows and has been included in exhibits at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, (Washington DC), Trenton City Art Museum, (Trenton, NJ), and the Deland Art Museum, (Deland, Fl). Keck has received three Maryland State Art Grants and a fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. Her work has been published in 5 books. Most recently her work was in The Successful Artist’s Career: Finding Your Way In the Business of Art, released March 1, 2012.

Lance A Miller. Ph.D. is an independent consultant and writer. He got his Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin in Experimental (cognitive) Psychology and Computer Sciences. He is the author of over 40 publications and has been a guest lecturer at NYU, Columbia University, University of Toronto, McGill University and George Washington University.

Keck and Miller share a love of words and art. Keck had observed MIller’s insightful written works and artful gift of being able to engage in art. He had often helped to inform her about her own works. Keck had been working for years with inspiration from many writers including her own writings. The idea evolved to do a body of work with one writer—Miller to create this exhibition. “Words and Paint - Uncommon Dialogue” is the result of this collaboration with each artist completing 12 works.

Changing Season, on display until April 15, features recent landscapes by Bonnie Roth Anderson, a well-known portrait painter who studied portraiture with Cedric Egeli, Dani Dawson and Henry Hensche. She has been a Maryland Hall faculty member for more than 25 years, 20 of those teaching portraiture. She was an Artist-in-Residence at Maryland Hall from xx until xx and is a founding member and former treasurer of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters.

In 2002, Anderson received the prestigious Annie Award from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County. As an accomplished portraitist, she has had the opportunity to complete the commissioned works of former Superintendent Admiral John Davidson, now on permanent display at the Naval Academy, and of the late State Senator John Cade and J. Lynne Wood, on permanent display at Anne Arundel Community College.

Also on display during March and April are two exhibitions in the Balcony Gallery on the third floor. From March 9 through April 3, Teachers with HeART, an exhibition of artwork by faculty and staff at Bates Performing and Visual Arts Magnet School, will be on display. From April 12 through 14, Maryland Hall will exhibit work from the 2012 Congressional Art Competition. The exhibition features artwork done by high school students from the 3rd Congressional District, submitted for this annual competition. An Awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 14 from 3 to 5 pm.

The Galleries at Maryland Hall are open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm and are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Maryland Hall, 801 Chase Street, Annapolis. For more information, go to www.marylandhall.org or call 410-263-5544.
