There is so much to like on Lisa Bouchelle’s newest album,” Bleu Room with a Red Vase,” it’s hard to know where to begin.

Just about every song has the ingredients that make it likely to stick in your mind—catchy tune, driving rhythm, and plaintive refrain all sung by an artist with a beautiful earthy soprano voice that can modulate tones skillfully and expressively. Bouchelle is an artist who is no stranger to hardship and hard knocks. (She formed her first band at the young age of 14.)She has toured extensively opening for acts that include: Bryan Adams, John Waite, Hot tuna, and Nils Lofgren. She’s also sung backup for Bruce Springteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, Cyndi Lauper, and Daryl Hall. Her current album, which she produced, features many notable musicians including John Eddie (Kid Rock) Glen Burtnik (Styx), Rob Hyman (The Booters) and Bobby Bandiera (Bon Jovi), but one of my favorites on the album is “Only the Tequila Talking” sung with John Popper (Blues Traveler) . Bouchelle and John Popper are currently touring together through the month of April. On April 19th they’ll be performing at the Rams Head in Annapolis and on April 2lst they’ll be in Falls Church at State Theatre.

But it was only the Tequila talking, shoulda taken it with a grain of salt, goes the refrain
Will you be a gentleman?
(sings Bouchelle)
Will you care if I don’t call?
(sings Popper)

Bouchelle’s “Paint Your Dreams” released in 2008 was #1 on the Independent Music Network’s Mainstream Top 30 Countdown, and #1 on the Indie AC/Hot AC chart. “Bleu Room with a Red Vase” should help boost her upward trajectory towards stardom. Perhaps my favorite on this CD is the first cut, “Heaven on Credit,” The refrain goes:

Kiss me kiss me
No one else will see us
With the exception of the moon and Jesus
I’m not worried that they’re going to tell…
C’mon and touch me touch me no one else will know it
It’s our secret I promise not to show it

Take to me to heaven on credit
Even if we owe a little debt to hell
Take me to heaven on credit
Even if we owe a little debt.

It’s a great song, composed and performed by a great artist who will be coming to our area this month. For more information about her CDs and upcoming performances visit her website at lisabouchelle.com
