The role of a captain is easy to describe, according to Annie Labat. “You need to keep the team motivated and focused,” she says. “A captain needs to make sure everyone listens to the coaches and does what they say.” With a firm grasp on the job responsibilities, Labat has set one of her goals this season on being named captain for a second consecutive year. She won’t know until the season starts, of course, but if last season is any indicator she has reason for optimism. “We name a captain at each position,” she says. “Last year, the coaches felt I was a good choice for the defense.” It seems the coaches’ intuition proved accurate, as she was later named the team’s Best Leader at the conclusion of her junior season. Head Coach Mark McGuire believes Labat has the maturity to handle a situation without overreacting. “She rallies her team with positive encouragement, which I’m a big believer in,” he says. “Annie’s outlook—‘We are also here to have fun’—helps the team chemistry get the right blend.” In addition to her responsibilities on defense and in the locker room, Labat would also like to contribute at mid-field this season. As active as Labat is on the field, she’s even more involved in and around the classroom. A member of the SGA, NHS, Interact Club, and Teen Court, she’s also been recognized by Minds in Motion, the Principal’s Honor Roll, and earned an Honorable Mention as a Maryland Distinguished Scholar.
