Annapolis girls basketball coach DeWayne Wallace says, “Leah means a whole lot to our team as our rebounding machine and I don’t know what we would do without her and her senior leadership.” Last month, Pinkney reached the 500-rebound plateau in her varsity career, something she is very proud of. “Reaching that milestone of 500 rebounds is very nice and being Homecoming Queen this year has helped to make my senior year just the best,” said Pinkney. With Pinkney, a forward, and senior guard, Jessica Reagans, the Panthers were hoping to make a run in the Class 3A East Regional playoffs. An upset victory last month over 4A South River boosted the Panthers confidence. “That game was amazing, such a team win,” said Pinkney. “We all did our best and helped each other the whole way through.” Pinkney, who is involved in the Panthers’ athletic program all year as a football team cheerleader, basketball player, and gymnast, carries a 3.5 grade-point-average and has applied to such schools as Penn State, Maryland, Duquesne, Towson, Virginia Tech, and Miami. She is undecided on a major but has thought about sports medicine, athletic training, and possibly communications. “Penn State is my first choice and since I’m into big colleges, I don’t expect to play basketball,” said Pinkney. “But I could play at a smaller school.” Pinkney is the daughter of Berman and Laverne Pinkney.
