For Melissa Osborn, leadership comes naturally. Already a captain of the varsity basketball team, Osborn expects to fulfill a similar role come softball season. “There is only one senior on the team this season, so the juniors have had no choice but to become leaders,” she says. Honored as a second-team North Bayside selection last season, she isn’t concerned with the team’s lack of experience—even if it extends beyond the lineup. “We have a new coach this season, too,” says Osborn. “Still, if everyone works hard and stays focused, we should definitely go far this season.” First-year Head Coach Walt Sedorovich has similar expectations. “My goal in all the years I’ve coached is to win the Maryland State Championship,” he says. “Key words: my goal. I believe that [Osborn] shares that goal.” Osborn’s athletic career at Kent Island High School has been filled with personal accolades. As a sophomore, she was also a second-team North Bayside selection for soccer; and as a junior she improved upon that feat by being selected to the first team. Despite clearly excelling on various fields of play, her next-level wishes rest upon the diamond. “In college, I’d like to play softball,” she says. “I’ve been looking at some Division-II schools, but I haven’t made any decisions yet.” A member of both the National Honor Society and the Principal’s Honor Roll, Osborn wants to become a middle-school math teacher after college. In addition to refereeing youth soccer, she is also an assistant teacher for an eighth-grade confirmation class.
