Even though he’s started in center field since his sophomore year, Todd Murphy has never been as focused as he is this year. “Knowing this was my last season, I approached this season differently,” he says. “I just prepared a little harder.”
Staying focused to that degree can’t be easy, not when you’re committed to as many groups as Murphy. He’s a three-sport athlete, contributing as a forward on the soccer team and a shooting guard for the basketball team, in addition to his center-field responsibilities on the baseball team. He also carries a 3.93 GPA, is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society, and is a flag-football referee for an inner-city youth league. Nonetheless, Murphy expects quite a season for himself: no errors, a batting average over .300, more than 15 stolen bases, and at least 12 wins as a team. But that’s not all: “I’ve got to make sure everyone else is all riled up,” he says. “I need to make sure the whole team is focused.” Certainly those expectations won’t draw any complaints from Coach Michael Hughes.
Murphy will attend Clemson University in the fall, where he plans to major in business. After graduation, he hopes to own his own business.
