Historic London Town and Gardens invites the public to their annual winter lecture series, Archaeological Discoveries of the Chesapeake, each Tuesday at 10 a.m. from January 26 to February 23. This year’s series will feature experts in the fields of archaeology, material culture and colonial history.
Dr. Julia King, Chair of the Museum Studies Program in the Anthropology Department at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, will kick off the series on January 26 with The Search for Zekiah Fort and the Charles County Courthouse. She will discuss the recent archaeological finds at these two significant sites. The series will continue on February 2 with Silas Hurry, Curator of Collections and Archaeology Lab Director at Historic St. Mary’s City. Mr. Hurry will describe the new, innovative St. John’s site archaeological museum at Historic St. Mary’s City. On February 9,Bly Straube, Senior Curator at Jamestown Rediscovery will present Digging up Dirt on Jamestown: 15 Years of Archaeological Investigation. The exciting new discoveries at Pig Point, an important Native American site in Anne Arundel County, will be the lecture topic on February 16, delivered by Dr. Al Luckenbach, Anne Arundel County Archaeologist and Director of the Lost Towns Project. The series will conclude on February 23 with Dr. Cary Carson, former Vice President for Research at Colonial Williamsburg. His lecture entitled, Chesapeake Archaeology from 45,000 feet: The Big Picture, will give a new perspective on archaeology. Dr. Carson, a noted social historian and authority on material culture, received his PhD from Harvard in 1974. After serving as historian at Historic St. Mary’s City, Carson made his career at Colonial Williamsburg. He co-edited Of Consuming Interests: The Style of Life in the Eighteenth Century.
The lecture series is supported by funding from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.
